And why I’m writing two more books to fix it.
I’ve never written a series before. I don’t even like to read them. I have a short attention span and when I read, everything else gets ignored, so I don’t have the time or the patience to read a story that spans more than one book.
So why am I writing a series? Simply put: because I’m a dumbass. Her Twisted Pleasures started out as a short story. I liked the characters so I wrote another story. When I finished Secret Storm and started brainstorming ideas for my next book, I found my Twisted stories and decided to put them together. I originally intended to give it a happy ending, but as the relationship between Alex, Talia, and Will got more and more complicated, I realized I couldn’t do it in just one book.
How does that make me a dumbass? Because I forgot why I write romance—and why many people read it: Escape.
The RWA defines a romance novel as a book having a central love story with an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending. But, rebel that I am, I decided to call Her Twisted Pleasures erotica and write the ending the way I wanted it. I knew there had to be cynical romance readers like me. Maybe there are, but the reason romance fiction was the largest share of the U.S. consumer market in 2011 is because readers want to get away from the harsh realities of everyday life, and when they spend time with a book, they want to walk away from it feeling good about something.
I still can’t give Alex, Talia, and Will a happy ending in one book. It’ll take three. But I promised they will get it… after I’ve put them through hell and back, but hey, that’s how I get my emotional satisfaction.
